#ruffaroundtheedges – part 22

Rough around the edges, and this one is about my first actual career job.

I did an apprenticeship. And what that means is you get to work in multiple parts of the organization for three to four months and learn every single aspect of the business.

So, I did that with a company called Avon Industrial Polymers, and we used to make rubber and plastic goods for the industrial sectors. In addition, we had a motorcycle tire division, where we used to make high-performance motorcycle tires.

So fast-forward, to the last time I was back in the UK, the company is now out of business, but I was able to retrieve some old pictures and some of the pictures are interesting because one of the places I used to work is what they called the black hole.

Why, most rubber compounds are black, and they are blackened by a product called carbon black.

So I used to work there in the black hole and oh my goodness, it was really hard to wash off your skin – I could never wear any light-colored shirts as it would stain the shirt collars from my skin!
